S.U.R.E. (Students United for Respect and Equality)
Mission: to improve school climate by providing a forum dedicated to combating challenges such as discrimination through the promotion of tolerance and respect.
History: SURE is an organization that was founded at Paulsboro High School in the 1990's in response to increased violence in schools. Its founder was former teacher and school leader William A. Gaines. S.U.R.E. was so well thought of by then Gloucester County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Mark Stanwood that is was recommended to be adopted in all Gloucester County high schools.
The annual highlight of S.U.R.E. is the S.U.R.E. Summit held each spring at Rowan University. All Gloucester County high schools participate is this day of speakers and workshops aimed at empowering our youth in their lives and communities against all types of discrimination.
S.U.R.E. is an after-school organization that meets once a week throughout the school year. Membership is open to all PHS students. Attendance is not mandatory for participation - students are encouraged to attend meetings when they can. History teacher and Department Chair Rachel Wulk and English Teacher Andrea Bish are the SURE advisors. Meetings, which run about an hour and are held in room 116, consist of open discussion groups, activities, and outreach projects. We hope you encourage your child to stop by any Thursday to see what SURE is all about.
